The governor\u2019s budget included a one-time $1 billion Protecting Our Wallets Energy Rebate (POWER) to help provide needed relief, and Albany started sending out checks on Sept. 21 for amounts between $100 to $250 to help offset higher energy costs for more than 8.2 million New Yorkers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Additionally, Gov. Hochul is expanding New York\u2019s Energy Affordability Program (EAP) to an additional 2.5 million households across the state. Currently, about 1 million households receive assistance under EAP, and Hochul\u2019s new target is designed to make utility payments no more than 6 percent of household income. The governor has directed the Department of Public Service to begin a new enrollment push to educate and help qualified consumers apply for the enhanced aid. Recipients of certain public assistance will automatically qualify, but they must apply. It is estimated that as many as half of all New York households may qualify for some level of relief on utility bills.
